What is Electromagnetic Sensitivity? Interview with Gale Dyskie, EHS Sufferer

By Ania Wilewska

“The people will not revolt. They will not look up from their screens long enough to notice what’s happening.”

– George Orwell, 1984

Did George Orwell predict modern times? Looking around, it’s hard to miss the modern human: hunched back position with eyes glued to the screen. It’s not just teenagers or adults; younger children, even infants, are addicted to smart devices. According to Pew Research Center, Ninety percent of adults carry their phone frequently and don’t turn it off. Teens, on average, spend nine hours per day on social media. Facebook investor, Sean Parker, admits one of their goals is to figure out “how do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible.” As we feed our addiction glued to our phones, we don’t notice the dangers we are numbly submitting ourselves to.

“Put a frog in a pot of boiling water and it will jump out. Put it in a pot of cold water that is slowly heated, and it won’t notice a thing and stay in the pot.” If we don’t see it, we don’t believe it. However, an increasing number of people are complaining of symptoms: sleep problems, tinnitus, chronic fatigue, headaches, problems with concentration, memory, learning and immune system, heart palpitations, nausea, dizziness, chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pain, restless leg syndrome, enlarged thyroid, swelling of face, neck, eye problems, rashes, body aches, frequent nosebleeds, as well as the feeling of burning and itchy skin. These symptoms worsen when in closer proximity to EMR devices, such as Wi-Fi routers, smartphones, cellular phone towers, microwaves, smart meters, Bluetooth devices, LED bulbs, etc.

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome (EHS) is a condition in which people are highly sensitive to electromagnetic fields. World Health Organization defined EHS as “a phenomenon where individuals experience adverse health effects while in the vicinity of devices emanating electric, magnetic or electromagnetic fields.” Magda Havas, Ph.D., has studied this condition and concluded that there is an increased risk of EHS when there is:

  • Spinal cord damage, whiplash
  • Brain damage, concussions
  • Chemical toxicity, such as high levels of mercury, lead, PCBs or other neurotoxins
  • Bacterial and/or parasitic infections such as Lyme Disease
  • Impaired immune function, such as lupus
  • Children and older individuals are at a much greater risk of developing health consequences due to EMR.

Gale Dyskie, a Chicago area resident, has suffered from EHS for years. I spoke with Gale about her experience. She shares the story of how her EHS started below.

Ania: Thank you for deciding to share your story with Conscious Community Magazine.

Gale: Thank you for taking the time to speak to me.

First off, I would like to say that this illness has been around for decades. Historically, it was originally known as radio wave illness or microwave sickness, which primarily attacks the nervous system. I believe at that point in time, it was more of anoccupational hazard by such professions as the scientific community or military personnel. It is currently known as Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS.)

I believe this illness is emerging because of the current environment we live in. We are now being subjected to an overload of electromagnetic radiation or frequencies (EMR/EMF) as well as radio frequencies (RF) which is affecting the general population.

As far as my story, some may find it hard to embrace, but I feel it is more important that I get my message out than any skepticism I receive. Believe me, if it would not have happened to me, I would need to take a step back to grasp the concept. Today I’m the “canary in the coal mine.”

Ania: How did this all start?

Gale: In the early 2000s, I took a job in field sales for my firm. I worked about nine to ten hours per day with my time being split between driving to my accounts, working with customers and daily computer work. In those days, I had a flip phone with an antenna, which you would need to extend for better reception. I spent on average, approximately five hours per day on my cellphone, which I held directly to my left ear/head. I held it to my left ear so that I could write with my right hand.

Occasionally, I would notice that my cellphone would “heat up” when I had an extended call and feel warm to the touch. One day when I was in an outlying area, while on a call, my phone began to actually become hot. I stayed on the call but eventually informed my client that I had to call them back as I felt like my ear was burning. When I got off the phone, I looked in the mirror and I noticed that the tip of my ear tissue was pink. I discounted the event and moved on. Unbeknownst to me, in the years to come, I would develop problems in the area where I held my phone: trigeminal neuralgia in my left upper jaw as well as a nodule on my left thyroid gland.

I used to keep my cellphone clipped to my belt on my left side and had it set for “vibrate” whenever I was in a meeting or with a customer. One evening after returning home, I felt what I thought was the phone vibrating as an incoming call. When I went to retrieve my phone, it wasn’t there but yet I was still feeling this strange vibration in my upper left abdominal area. “This is Strange” is what I thought to myself but again, I forgot about it and moved on.

I used my laptop quite often when I was in the field and used to position it directly on my lap because it was most comfortable for me personally. I thought nothing of it at the time. At times, I developed strange skin irritations in my upper thighs, such as an allergic reaction. My skin was red and blotchy but then would clear up. My doctor stated that this is probably hives and asked me if I had changed laundry soap or personal care products, but I had not. This continued on and off for quite some time, and I would take an allergy pill to help alleviate it. I never related this as possibly a problem to my laptop being set directly onto my lap.

I also had purchased a wireless router because it allowed me so much freedom, and I was able to work on my side porch and not in my office. I began to experience severe insomnia a few weeks later. I consulted my physician, and he informed me that maybe it was due to pre-menopause and that I should take a sleeping aid. Little did I know that insomnia was a symptom of EHS.

In the year 2008, life was good for me personally and professionally, but by the end of 2008, my life, as I knew it, would cease to exist. In mid-2008, I seriously injured my ankle which in turn triggered a condition called RSD. Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy is considered a neurological condition, or by some, an autoimmune condition, which is very painful. Even though I was in a tremendous amount of pain, I was determined to beat the condition. All I thought of was getting back to my life and my work. I had just made the sale of my career a month prior (3.4 million) and was looking forward to the rewards which I was going to receive; personal recognition, a lavish sales award trip, a nice promotion and a pay increase. Not to mention the fact that I loved my job and enjoyed the daily social contact with coworkers and customers.

I continued to do physical therapy but was progressing very slowly. Due to this, my podiatrist ordered an MRI to see if there was any additional damage to my ligaments/tendons. When I went in for the MRI, I experienced some very strange and inexplicable symptoms. During the MRI, I began to feel burning in my right ankle and foot which was associated with my RSD, but then the burning pain began to spread to both my legs and then into my abdominal area. It was very painful, and I asked the technician to stop the MRI. I asked her if this was normal as I had never had an MRI and she said that she did not think so and asked me to “hang in there” as there was only a short amount of time to complete the MRI. I complied and then the burning became very intense. I felt as if there was an entity within my body and felt like someone had plugged me into a socket and I was being “fried alive.” I felt numbness in my legs, began to tremble and felt like I was getting heart palpitations. At that point, I stated I had to stop the MRI as I was in such pain. I went home and directly to bed because I was in horrible pain. Within 24 hours the pain subsided to normal RSD pain, but I still felt as if I was shaking on the inside.

After that, I began what I would call an unbelievable array of strange health problems. My burning pain increased to an unbearable level and my RSD was flaring up even worse. I was experiencing whole body edema, tinnitus, headaches, skin irritations, tingling sensations in my spine and more inexplicable symptoms.

I became very sick and could barely function. As I had no idea what was happening, I went from doctor to doctor with no diagnosis. I remember talking to my doctor and putting my hands in my face and crying saying “I don’t know what is happening to me. Please, help me. I feel like I am losing my mind.” No one could explain my health problems.

One day, I flipped on the light switch and felt a wave of electricity go through me. I attributed it to static in the air, but it began to happen more often. I also noticed that when I watched TV, after about two hours my legs would start to tingle and burn. Then the radio started to bother me. When I used my hairdryer, my burning pain greatly increased. One day I was driving home and my legs began to burn very badly. Being that I was only a short distance from home, I continued to drive as I had to get home, but I was truly suffering. I got to the point where I could no longer drive due to the burning pain and even as a passenger I sat in the back because for some reason, I did not experience as much burning pain in that location. Even being in the backseat, my travel time was now limited to short car rides because of the pain. It was so bad that my podiatrist began to come to my home to give me treatments for my RSD. He was using electronic stimuli to help heal my tissues but whenever he treated me, afterward, my foot would begin to burn more and swell. One day, he actually witnessed the swelling after he applied the electric device and saw how it was aggravating my condition but had no explanation for it. Later, I would understand why.

Then I could no longer use my cordless phone or my cellphone without experiencing physical pain. What in the world was happening to me?

One night, I turned on the microwave to make tea and my entire body began to burn. I immediately turned off the microwave and said to myself “This is insane and cannot be happening.” I remembered reading somewhere about microwave sickness and asked a friend to look on the internet to see if maybe in some way this was related to what was happening to me.

The internet search proved very fruitful and was a startling revelation. It was then that I was introduced to a condition called EHS, which I never heard of. I was astonished to find out that I had many of the symptoms associated with EHS. Finally, I found an explanation for what I had been experiencing. I realized that I actually had a widely unknown health condition which impacts the nervous system.

I began to connect the dots. My nervous system was giving me signals all along, but I was unable to correlate them. If my nervous system could have spoken to me, it would have said, “Houston, we have a problem.”

Could the RF from my cellphone and other related RF products, as well as electromagnetic fields, have been compromising my nervous system all along? The burning ear pain from the phone, the rashes while on the laptop, the insomnia from Wi-Fi, the painful burning in the car from all the EMF within a car itself. I started to relate all my symptoms to the source.  Also, the MRI probably was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” as an MRI is one of the most extreme magnetic fields one can be subjected to. It put my already damaged nervous system into the final downward spin. My system finally “crashed and burned” from the perfect storm of a toxic recipe.

I, then, began to “unplug,” so to speak. No TV, Wi-Fi, microwave, computer, cellphone, cordless phone or radio. I turned off as much as I could that had to relate to electric or RF. Within weeks my pain level had decreased. I even noticed that my RSD was not as severe because EMF caused my nervous system to flare up. I am sure that is why any type of electronic therapy was irritating my RSD.

I began to function somewhat normally as long as I avoided strong sources of EMF or RF. However, when I ventured into the public, a medical facility, stores, etc., my symptoms would worsen. Any overexposure to EMF and RF exasperated my symptoms as well as my RSD. I could not even tolerate anyone else’s home without some level of discomfort or simply had to leave as I soon as I began to feel the onset of symptoms.

I, now, have to live in an “unplugged world” in order to survive. I try to avoid as much EMF as possible, but I am under constant threat as RF signals continue to escalate at a high rate and I am unable to escape them.

Ania: What do you do to mitigate your symptoms?

Gale: To mitigate my symptoms, I have done a series of things. I do not have any electricity in my bedroom at any time. At night, I turn off the electricity to my entire home. I have no cellphone, Wi-Fi or wireless products in my home. I do not have a smart meter as my electric meter. (Thank you, ComEd, for being cooperative.) I have installed blocking material under my exterior siding to help reduce exposure and have purchased Wi-Fi blocking curtains.

Also, I purchased a set of meters, in which you can measure the amount of EMF and RF in your environment, so I could determine where high levels of exposure were. With a combination of the above, I was able to keep my home at a level that I can tolerate, however, I was still exposed to the external environment which I could not control.

Ania: Is there anyone in your family that is experiencing a similar situation?

Gale: No. I believe this condition is not hereditary but is a product of a toxic environment which one is exposed to over time.

Ania: Are there many people you know who struggle with EHS?

Gale: Yes. I have met and spoken with others who have EHS. All of our symptoms vary, but we are all experiencing similar health effects. When you realize that you are not alone, it’s clear to see that there is truly an invisible disease affecting all of society on some level. In some ways, I feel fortunate because I can feel the danger in the form of physical pain and try to protect myself. Most people have no idea that they are in harm’s way. Just because one does not feel anything does not mean you are not being affected. For example, you cannot feel high cholesterol, but you know it can affect you, and you can have it verified through a blood test. As there is no way to check to see if you’re being affected from a physical standpoint by EHS and RF, you have no way to verify any adverse health effects. If you were unable to check cholesterol, you might suffer a heart attack. In other words, by the time you begin to experience noticeable symptoms, it may be too late and your symptoms could be irreversible or unbearable to tolerate in the current environment. It could also comprise the immune or nervous system which would lead to other health problems.

I believe that you become more susceptible to EHS based on the number of stimuli that you are under and also the length of time you are exposed. Too much of anything can be harmful. For example, too much sugar, too much alcohol, high exposure to the UV rays of the sun, and even, something as benign as consuming excessive amounts of water can have serious health effects. If you could see electromagnetic radiation and radio frequency, you would see that you are being bathed in a lake of immeasurable toxic waves.

Please understand that I am not against technology, but we need to take into consideration the amount of EMF and RF that is being put into the environment and our exposure levels. The more wireless frequencies we add to our environment, the more the toxic-load will become. This is especially important as we are exposed 24/7 for the rest of our lives.

Ania: Is there anything that helps when you get exposed to EMF?

Gale: Avoidance is the best way to combat EMF and RF. However, how can one avoid these things when they are forced upon you? When we instituted a “no smoking” policy, you could avoid a cancerous habit of others, but there is no way to combat this on that level. Basically, there will be “nowhere to run, nowhere to hide” from the biological danger to our systems. However, there are many products which can reduce or block Wi-Fi that can be installed within your home, which I have done, that are helpful to reduce exposure.

Ania: Are there any holistic solutions that help?

Gale: Again, avoidance is a key factor.

I have turned to alternative and holistic medicine as the medical community here in the United States does not recognize this condition, but it is recognized in some countries in Europe. I have done therapies such as cranial sacral, detoxification, magnesium supplements, and many others. But, this gives me temporary relief from the symptoms. There is no “silver bullet” cure for this except to totally get away from it so that your body can recover. It is very similar to sleep deprivation. Unless your system can rest and recover, you will experience physiological side effects. Without the proper “down-time,” the reaction to EHS will become more pronounced over time, similar to a severe allergic reaction.

Ania: EHS certainly has a major impact on a person’s life, how do you manage?

Gale: Having EHS is a life-changing event. Not only does a person have to deal with the physical pain, but also the emotional pain which can be heartbreaking and very stressful. Imagine not being able to do all the things that you loved. Not being able to travel, not being able to go to a theater, concert, tolerate a restaurant, social gatherings, etc. due to EMF and Wi-Fi. You feel “cut off” from society and often feel lonely. Also, this condition has a huge impact on your personal relationships, friends and family members, not to mention the financial aspect due to loss of employment.

For me, having EHS was devastating as I was very social and an “on-the-go” person. I had planned on spending my retirement years traveling around the country, doing volunteer work and basically spending a lot of time in “party mode”. My motto was “Hey if you are gonna go out, go out with a flare!”

Even though I now suffer from EHS, RSD, fibromyalgia and trigeminal neuralgia, all related to nervous system disorders, it is still a “wonderful life”. You just have to make it wonderful in a new way.

I have adjusted to my “unplugged” life and made new goals. My experience made me realize how important the simple things in life can be and that every day is a gift for us to treasure. I learned to be thankful for what I can do, as opposed to what I cannot do. Even though there are no words to express how much I miss my prior life, I have found a way to be grateful and live every day to the fullest.

Sharing quality times time with friends and loved ones, finding things that make you laugh, keeping a positive attitude, enjoying every moment as much as possible and striving to make a difference in the world. I am still in love with life; it’s just a different life.

There is an increasing number of individuals with a story like Gale’s around the world. Their lives are turned upside down. They are definitely not making this up. Biological and Health Effects of Microwave Radio Frequency Transmissions—A Review of the Research Literaturestates, “A large body of scientific research documents that RF exposures at low levels can produce adverse biological or health effects. The installation of RF-transmitting “smart meters” by our electric utility could significantly increase the level of RF exposure.” They continue on to say, “Microwave RF exposure can produce acute symptoms in some individuals. These symptoms can include headache, sleep disturbance, difficulty in concentration, memory disturbance, fatigue, depression, irritability, dizziness, malaise, tinnitus, burning and flushed skin, digestive disturbance, tremor and cardiac irregularities.” These symptoms are reflected in what EHS sufferers experience. Interestingly enough, the report explains that in the 1950s the term “microwave sickness” was coined by the Russians. From 1953 to 1978 the U.S. Embassy in Moscow was targeted with beams of microwave RF and many of the employees of the embassy suffered from “microwave sickness” symptoms.

Parallel to the Russian research, other nations have also studied RF. Barrie Trower, a microwave weapons expert, has extensively discussed the known dangers of RF for decades now. “By 1971, the US Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) referenced 2,300 research articles listing in excess 120 impairments and illnesses attributed to radiofrequency and microwave radiation.” The telecommunication industry admits that there are no safety studies, but there certainly are many studies showing the very negative effects of EMR.

Maybe it’s time to look up from the screens and look around at what is happening to us. Let’s not be the “boiling frog.” As we see the other frogs jumping out because it’s no longer a comfortable and safe environment to continue the survival of our species, we should consider taking an action. The first action to take is to inform yourselves. Knowledge is power and as we continue to grow in power and unite we can really make a difference. There are examples of more groups stopping the rollout of 5G, one of them is in Brussels, Belgium. The environment minister, Céline Fremault, put a stop due to radiation concerns. She said, “I cannot welcome such technology if the radiation standards, which must protect the citizens, are not respected—5G, or not.” Along with Brussels, Switzerland’s elected local officials are resisting installation due to health concerns. Another group in the United States, called Stop 5G Florida, has passed a resolution to perform safety studies for 5G in Hallandale, FL. They are an inspiration to all of us to lead in our areas. By working together with our government, we can make a difference. Pass the knowledge forward.

  1. I am Gale’s husband….These are REAL things that happen to her and to many others. So true are the items above. There needs to be more research on technology before rolling it out. There is research out now (see above) from creditable sources backing these technology challenges that make people sick. There are more challenges down the road as generations become older. I urge people to educate themselves before “sluffing” things off and believing that everything is ok otherwise these things would not be happening.

  2. I genuinely enjoy reading through on this internet site, it has excellent content.
