“Our Hearts will go to sleep in trauma and abusive experiences. It will stay asleep until you grow up and you are strong enough and gain the wisdom you need…then your hearts will awaken again in your healing journey…” – Elders speak of all trauma that put all our hearts to sleep

On January 11th, I attended a meditation session led by Spiritual Intuitive and Energy Healer, Sherry Methling. A certified Naprapath and Massage therapist, she is the founder of Ancient Healings Around the World. Upon meeting Sherry, it was immediately clear that she was an old and worldly soul who has mastered a plethora of healing modalities in the work that she does. In fact, I think that Ancient Healings Around the World is the perfect name for her business. As she led us through the meditation, I noted that she called out a couple of areas of the body. I was amazed to find that each of the areas that she referenced were parts of my body with which I had issues. After the group meditation, I met with her for a one-on-one interview for a short time. No sooner did we begin to speak, she immediately tapped into emotional challenges that I was having related to my heart. While I enjoyed the meditation and the subsequent conversation thereafter, it was clear to me that she had a gift as an intuitive healer, and that I needed to learn more about her healing capacities. A few weeks later I met with her again for a one-on-one healing session.

“Pain feels like a fast stab wound to the heart. But then healing feels like the wind against your face when you are spreading your wings and flying through the air! We may not have wings growing out of our backs, but healing is the closest thing that will give us that wind against our faces.” – C. JoyBell C.

When I arrived for the session, Sherry asked me several questions about my current emotional and physical states. I told her that I had recently undergone some emotionally painful experiences and that I had a heavy heart. She shared that she had seen the heaviness in my heart from as early as the age of five. With her guidance, I recounted a great deal of sad situations I have experienced throughout my life. After doing a thorough investigation, she had me lie on the treatment table, and the first thing she did was ask me to select three aromatherapy bottles from a small sack.

To backtrack for a moment, throughout most of my life I have had issues with my sense of smell. When I was 16, I sustained a concussion, and since then I have had difficulties with my ability to smell. In fact, in my late teens, I was unable to smell anything for over a year (a little dangerous when you are in the midst of a fire, and can’t smell the smoke – but that’s another story). Upon investigation, a neurologist discovered that the issue was due to my small nasal passages, combined with allergies and the head injury. While the condition has improved slightly, throughout the years, I have grown accustomed to it. In fact, I estimate that my ability to smell is usually at about 30% of full capacity.

“I invite you to drink in the divine nectar of aromatic love and let it penetrate you in the deepest, most profound ways. Trust that the oils are working side-by-side to heal, regenerate, and teach you. The more you use them, the more they’ll reveal their secrets to you.” – Elana Millman, Aromatherapy for Sensual Living: Essential Oils for the Ecstatic Soul

As I lay on the table, I was shocked by the sudden ability I had to smell the aromatherapy scents that Sherry used to support my healing. They were each very distinct, rich, and poignant. It was so exciting to be able to fully breathe in the scents, and engage with their healing powers. I found myself transported into an alternate state, with a heightened sensual sense of awareness and receptivity. Sherry’s treatment was one of the most delicious healings I have ever experienced.

I was taken on a powerful journey, experiencing delight in fully engaging my sense of smell – something I have not been able to enjoy since my teenage years! It was such a gift, and an absolute pleasure!

“A huge weight had been lifted off of my energetic body, and I melted into a healing experience that raised me energetically to new heights.”

While my eyes were closed, I was aware that along with the aromatherapy, Sherry also used healing stones, and a multitude of other modalities to support me. Throughout the session, she named many parts of my body that she was focusing on. She dispelled a great deal of energy blocks, and when the session ended, I felt that a 250-pound energetic weight had been lifted from me. I felt unburdened and liberated.

“Our wounds are often the openings into the best and most beautiful part of us.” – David Richo

Since my session with Sherry, I’ve been exploring the times when I have experienced a heavy heart during my life. I know that my heart has been speaking to me and that it is constantly moving towards greater opening. I am grateful that the healing opportunities have only manifested on an energetic level. At this point of my spiritual evolution, I’m also deeply grateful for my training and experience at the Dhamma Pakasa Vipassana Meditation Center, in Pecatonica, Illinois. Just after my session with Sherry, I attended a three-day Silent Meditation Retreat at the center. I found it profoundly healing and calming. After about 30 years of knowing that I “should” meditate on a regular basis, I am finally doing so. As I practice Vipassana, I quiet my mind and body and observe the layers of energetic blocks that I hold within me. I encourage you to do the same. Try to simply witness the feelings in your body – without judgment of any kind. Simply “be” with yourself. In time, I have no doubt that you too will experience your wounds as profound openings. As I continue my exploration, I have no doubt that the “best and most beautiful” part of me is revealing herself. I celebrate liberation as my heart continues to flower, and I delight in embracing my life in all of its fullness. Namaste.
