Fantastic Fungi Premiere
with Director Louie Schwartzberg Q&A
(Opening Weekend)
Friday, Oct. 18 – Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019

From Friday, Oct.18 through Thursday, Oct. 24, the Gene Siskel Film Center will present the Chicago premiere of Fantastic Fungi. This revealing and marvelously mind-boggling documentary explores the hidden kingdom of mushrooms, the unique fruit of mycelium, an all-pervasive fungal network that not only lives beneath our feet but subversively dominates the earth. The 50s rockabilly hit “There Was a Fungus Among Us,” unwittingly proclaimed the fact: mycelium is everywhere, whether seen or unseen. Experts including groundbreaking scientist/mycologist Paul Stamets and authors Michael Pollan, Eugenia Bone and Andrew Weil reveal the ways in which mushrooms harbor a vast and barely explored potential for healing, renewing the environment, providing sustenance and altering consciousness, but only if mankind is savvy enough to tap their enormous power. Awe-inspiring time-lapse macro cinematography by director Schwartzberg (Wings of Life) brings mushrooms and their underworld networks to astonishing vibrant life for a don’t-miss experience.

Director Louie Schwartzberg is scheduled to appear for audience discussion on Friday (8 p.m. only – tentative) and Saturday.

Fantastic Fungi, 2018, Louie Schwartzberg, USA, 81 min., narrated by Brie Larson, DCP digital.

Location: Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, located at 164 N. State St. Chicago,
IL 60601.

Visit http://www.siskelfilmcenter.org/fantastic-fungi for more information.

Cost: Tickets to each screening—unless stated otherwise—are $12/general admission, $7/students and $6/Film Center members.

Immortal Hero Film
Friday, Oct. 25, 2019

Eastern New Thought Meets Western New Thought in Immortal Hero, a film based on the epiphany that has inspired Ryuho Okawa to lead Happy Science, Japan’s budding spiritual movement that has been around for more than 30 years, will open in Chicago on October 25, 2019.

Based on the true story of the near-death-experience that compelled Ryuho Okawa to devote his life to spreading the truth he received from the spiritual realms and masters, Immortal Hero tells the dramatic, inspiring story of Makoto Mioya, a highly successful Japanese writer and publisher who miraculously heals himself from a fatal heart condition after a near-death visitation from powerful spiritual beings. As part of the recovery process, Makoto writes about his powerful ‘rebirth’ as an enlightened and transformed teacher. Although he faces challenges at home and abroad, Makoto promises to use the second chance at life he has been blessed with to make a positive difference for as many people as possible. He commits to ‘die for the truth,’ a powerful covenant that defines the purity and intensity of his message of love, our mutual responsibility for one another and world peace.
