In my July column, I asked the question, “Why are we so relieved when tragic things can be tied to a physical abnormality, and not just a mental one?” I also promised to explore further the question, “What is a Spirit to do when the human is broken?” Well, I am still searching for answers to those questions.
In the meantime, I’m flying high in body, mind, and spirit, after just returning from a cruise to Alaska with 100 or so like-minded, soul-searching members of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) (noetic.org). I’m still trying to digest all of the great information and experiences that I had with them, so I’ll leave that for a future column.
I’ll focus on some special cloud connections that nourished my spirit and helped center me on my Alaska Spiritual Traveler journey. It all started with preparing for my journey. I have to thank Eddie Conner (eddieconner.com), the LA medium and author who wrote a terrific travel prep workbook entitled How to Get Your Travel Freq On!: While Engaging Your Heart, Mind and Soul. There are a lot of great exercises; the one that I resonated most with is called “Lullaby.” Eddie suggests that we create a list of three words that we can use as we fall asleep, or in a meditative state, that address how we desire our travels (and our lives) to unfold. For the Alaska trip I used: Fun, Fantastic, Fellowship, Friendships, Connections, Rest and Relaxation.
I know, that’s more than three words, yet I always say, “Go with your Soul Flow,” and that was mine.
I didn’t stop there, however. My other “lullaby” was Love, Light, Gratitude, Healing. That’s the one, I think, that kicked in over and over again, as I had many spiritual cloud connection experiences.
The first connection occurred on my flight from Chicago to Seattle. I chatted a bit with my seat mates, and was about to do what I often do during a flight; put in my earbuds and listen to some meditative tunes on my iPod. Then my vision was drawn to the puffy little clouds that floated outside my window. I stopped, and was drawn into the now moment of being, just being with the clouds, the sky, the land… The feeling of being one with the environment enveloped me, and I stayed there through much of the flight. Thank you Eddie, for helping me connect with that cloud and those moments.
The second connection occurred on my first Alaska morning. I went out on my balcony at five am. Here’s what I wrote in my journal:
I welcomed my first Alaska sunrise this morning. I bundled up and stood on the balcony of our (sic) room, watching the inky black as it brightened and filled with the rose tones of first light. Then I saw her–a sky goddess, a spirit in cloud-spun garments, pulling, pulling, pulling the dawn from the sky. I didn't know then what her name was. It took a Google search for sky spirit prayers and clicking on the link to Spiral Goddess (spiralgoddess.com) to discover her name and her prayer. She is The Great Crone. Here is her prayer:
“Prayer for the Great Crone also known as Daybreak”
Just before the first glimmerings of dawn, the Great Crone sweeps across the sky and clothes the dying night in Her cloak. She wraps it tenderly and gently, enfolding each star, each galaxy, each universe in Her essence.
Slowly the Great Crone draws back Her cloak revealing gold, and pink, violet and the steely blue tones of first light. She is the Crone, Mistress of Re-birth. We honor Her as "Protectress of Endings" and "Birther of New Beginnings."
Dawn each day, is an affirmation of re-birth and a sacred ritual of the Crone's cycles and seasons. Abby Willowroot ©1998
This dawn was truly a special moment. My Spiritual Traveler Guides blog has the mission of nourishing one’s spirit and soul wherever you roam. This certainly nourished mine!
I had many spiritual adventures on my Alaska cruise. The next spirit cloud encounter, however, didn’t occur until I was on the plane back to O’Hare Airport. I was embraced by the clouds of sunset as they turned a striking shade of red-orange, and streaked across the sky. I didn’t see any sky cloud beings this time. However, it got me to thinking; if there is a goddess of the dawn, then there must be a god or goddess spirit of the sunset.
Of course, I did an Internet search on that. This is what I discovered; that there are many gods and goddesses, both for the dawn, and the sunset. Each culture has its own deities. I decided to end this month’s column with a Native American prayer translated by the Lakota Chief Yellow Lark in 1887, which I found at: worldprayers.org.
Oh, Great Spirit,
whose voice I hear in the winds
and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me.
I am small and weak.
I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes
ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made
and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand
the things you have taught my people.
Let me learn the lessons you have hidden
in every leaf and rock.
I seek strength, not to be superior to my brother,
but to fight my greatest enemy – myself.
Make me always ready to come to you
with clean hands and straight eyes,
so when life fades, as the fading sunset,
my spirit will come to you
without shame.
My Advice: My hope is that you’ve enjoyed my cloud wandering so much that you will do some cloud connecting of your own. Let your body, mind, soul, and spirit connect with sky and its cloud garments. We often think of clouds as that which obscures our vision, yet with the right “now moment” mindset, it’s the clouds that can set us free.
