Interview with Sarah Ingram from eSCENTialsAroma

Anna J Anthony: Sarah, when did you first become interested in essential oils?

Sarah Ingram: After the birth of my children, I started realizing all of the everyday bad things that were going into their bodies. I started paying more attention to ingredients in items such as lotions, foods, and even medications. I was appalled by what we were doing as a society to our children! I had a strong passion for health, yet I knew that my focus wasn’t being a doctor, or “full blown science.” I felt that I fit more into the natural health sector. I spent 15 years as an event planner. I was a fan of the famous celebrity wedding planner David Tutera’s television show, CELEBrations. He had one episode where the bridesmaids all created their own perfume as a gift from the bride. I thought what if I one-up this idea, and use all natural essential oils? I then started my own business hosting home parties where the attendees created their own perfumes using all natural ingredients. I loved it! I still love it! Although home parties are difficult to do. At these events attendees were asking questions about which oils were good for various ailments. It felt very natural at this point that I should get my certification as the next step. After receiving my Aromatherapist certification, I started working with people, and discussing the issues they were hoping to resolve. I started playing with oils and creating my line.

AA: There are many large companies that are bringing awareness back to the benefits of essential oils over the past few years. How has this benefitted or challenged your business, and what sets you apart from them?

SI: It has been a benefit, as lately when I speak to people about my products they have heard of essential oils. The challenge at times can be that they might assume that I am looking to sell them a type of membership, when that is not my focus at all. What sets me apart is that I have the education. I create ready-to-use oil blends. I make it easy, so that someone doesn’t have to worry about what quantities to put, and what to mix together for a specific issue. I do all of that for them. I also create custom oil blends. I have created specific blends for cancer patients, acid reflux, and restless leg syndrome, just to name a few. It is important to be educated on the properties of the oils, in order to safely and properly prescribe these.

AA: I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Body Mind Spirit Expo. One of the many things about you and your products that intrigued me was that you mentioned that you grow your own herbs that you use in your products.

SI: I grow many of my own herbs, such as the lavender, chamomile, and mint that are used in my herbal eye masks and sachets. My family and I are in the process of purchasing a farm that will be a full-blown lavender and herb farm. I have a distiller, and over the next two to three years I will be able to distill my own essential oils. There are many people who have no idea where their oils are coming from. I am so excited to know that they will be 100% pure, grown from my herbs, and distilled under my care and watch.

AA: This is so exciting! Do you envision the farm being a place that your clients can come to and attend classes, shop, etc.?

SI: Yes! I plan on having a stand that would be open on weekends. If the property allows, I would eventually like it to be a place where we could host events such as baby showers and bridal showers. I would like to host a lavender festival as well.

AA: I’m getting that you really like lavender! Why is it your favorite?

SI: Yes, it is my favorite! I love it because it is the safest and most versatile herb and essential oil there is. It is an antidepressant, antibacterial, antiviral, antispasmodic, as well as having many other properties. It does it all!

AA: Your packaging is beautiful, and I love that your ingredients are wild-crafted!

SI: Thank you. I love cobalt blue! I always wanted my packaging to be elegant. The ingredients I use are all organic wild-crafted. Wild-crafted is when the plant has naturally grown in its own environment, and nothing has been done to it. There are many organic farms that have been in families for hundreds of years using heirloom seeds, yet they can’t afford to become certified organic. My wholesaler supports these types of farms. A great example would be the difference between farm-raised salmon and wild salmon. The wild salmon would be considered “wild-crafted.” I use the highest grade essential oils that I can find, and I feel that makes all the difference. Many of the essential oils you find in the stores are already diluted with the carrier oil. I am able to use oils that are not common, such as pure rose oil, yarrow, and many others that you cannot buy from a shelf. I take all the therapeutic properties of these high quality oils so they compound each other. It’s done for you. You don’t have to learn it yourself.

AA: What are some of your favorite and best selling products?

SI: My aromatherapy diffuser sprays such as the Linen spray for sleep. The roll-ons are a favorite because they are so easy to use. I have one for hormonal balance. Women are drawn to flowers because they naturally balance our hormones. Breathe Deep is a respiratory blend for asthma and allergy relief. My bug spray and dog products have been a big hit! I have a crystal infused metaphysical line. They combine essential oils based on a goal you are trying to achieve. My Alignment blend is jasper-infused, and uses essential oils that align chakras. Cleanse and Heal spray is a fluorite-infused sage spray. It’s a smokeless alternative to sage cleansing. It’s great for space and aura cleansing. In addition to providing custom blends, I can also create private label blends for your business as well.

AA: These blends have been used for ages, and come from Mother Nature. It makes sense that they would be the best remedies.

SI: Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years. It was first used by the Egyptians. Cleopatra used to soak her sails in essential oils in order to attract men. It was used by the Greeks, Romans, and Persians. The term aromatherapy was first coined in 1910 by the French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, when he tragically caught his arm on fire, and dipped it in a vat of lavender essential oil that was next to him, and it healed without a scar. This is how he discovered the topical healing properties of essential oils.

AA: Where can we purchase your products?

SI: You can purchase on my website eSCENTialsAroma.com. I sell my products at a few different chiropractor’s offices, yoga studios, and retail stores. I am looking to expand my retail presence, and am open to inquiries.
