Interview – The Benefits of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

By Kaye Berjot

Ania Massat is an experienced Life and Wellness coach, an NLP Practitioner and Trainer. For well over 11 years, she has cultivated and grown her knowledge of and experience in the healthy and beneficial ways of connecting the mind and body. Anyone who is on a journey towards greater self-awareness can participate in her classes and training. She is an expert in wellness coaching, including CranioSacral Therapy.

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a psychological approach to communication and personal development that focuses on the connection between mind and language, and how that connection affects our body and behavior.

CranioSacral Therapy is a therapy used to work with infants, youth, adults, and the elderly. It is a non-invasive therapy that balances body and mind. Clients have seen amazing results with ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma of all kinds, PTSD, grief, memory loss, insecurities, and other health issues, including TMJ syndrome, and organ dysfunctions.

Kaye Berjot: How did you become involved with Wellness Coaching?

Ania Massat: My interests in wellness started very early in my life. As a child, my father and I would go and forage for holistic remedies in Poland, and it has always been a part of my life.

KB: How did life coaching become a part of your journey?

AM: Many of my Massage therapy and Craniosacral therapy clients began asking me questions and wanted me to mentor them, yet at the time, I was unable to coach them. This intrigued me enough to go and find out how to be able to coach and mentor. That is how I discovered NLP training.

KB: What is NLP?

AM: For me personally, NLP is a tool, a set of techniques that can be used to create a solution, or answers to the internal questions that arise in us. I like to refer to it as “Google Maps located within our Mind,” knowing that there is already an answer to be found within. There are many ways to get to the endpoint, which means that there are many different modalities and techniques existing to get us where we want to go.

KB: What are the benefits of NLP?

AM: NLP is an amazing tool to be used by itself, or in combination with many other techniques. It breaks down a lack of self-understanding into deep self-knowing. By learning how our unique mind processes information, accessing certain states, we can help to release old and limiting belief systems, creating more positive life experiences. On a personal level, NLP can help to strengthen self-esteem, social awareness, and self- confidence by creating more choices, and more skills for dealing with life’s challenges. NLP has a strong impact on our communication with others, self-motivation, goal-setting, and staying focused abilities. All that is enclosed within our mind can be accomplished if we let it.

KB: How have NLP techniques been beneficial in your life?

AM: The techniques I’ve learned during NLP Practitioner training brought me self-awareness; understanding who I am, my reactions to situations, people, the discovery of my own behavioral patterns and habits. Without this knowing, it wouldn’t have been possible to find my steering wheel; not knowing where to go and how to get there would have left me lost and relying on others. When we are in the dream state, we are in what I call “Autopilot,” hoping not to find ourselves in less than comfortable states.

KB: How are the patterns in life created, and how do they contribute to limiting beliefs?

AM: We must understand that when a situation happens (an incident, trauma, a word that could hurt us), usually in an early stage of our life, it creates a reaction that comes from inside of us, the feeling that is our response to the traumatic experience is then ingrained in our subconscious mind, thus it creates a pattern of reoccurrence. It is almost like we create an internal conclusion about ourselves that sticks with us for years to come. This causes us to struggle with the same pattern. This difference between wanting something consciously, and subconsciously bringing the opposite to our life creates an internal conflict. So, it’s good to be able to see the patterns, so that we can reset from ground zero and bring awareness.

KB: So, it’s about bringing awareness? Where or how do we fix the pattern? Do we repair this consciously?

AM: It is about awareness yes, but you can only fix it in the subconscious. The awareness is only to identify that there is a pattern. This is where NLP training comes into play; it gives many useful tools to help ourselves and others to release the old patterns and habitual behaviors, as well as how to use them on an everyday basis.

The awareness is a big part of the healing process. When the changes and repairing happens to the subconscious mind, our work is not done. There is no quick pill to swallow. It is just the beginning of the journey…  by understanding why something reoccurs in our life, and knowing what triggers certain behaviors, we can give a set of tools to be used in order to further develop the self.

KB: What are three things that you would like Conscious Community Magazine readers to know about what you’ve learned?

AM: First, I’ve learned that life is a bumpy road, that’s why you must always buckle up. It’s interesting how life can take you from the highest and most beautiful mountains into the dark and low valleys. If you stop to differentiate between what is good or bad, you will find that they are all just experiences along the way; they are shaping us, and are our life lessons. If you let life unfold, you develop humbleness and acceptance, yet if you don’t, you develop resistance and struggles, which further lead to many of life’s complications.

Second, I learned how to stay in the present moment. Until we stop living in our past, or escaping into the future, we miss the opportunity to be fully alive. I call it “sleeping.” To wake up is to be in the present moment here and now, without any stories attached.

Third, I learned the art of gratitude and apply it in every moment. I live mindfully.

I’d also like to invite the Conscious Community readers to attend my next NLP Practitioner Training that will start in July. For specific class schedules and locations, please check the website: evolvedlifeandwellness.com.
